2015 Annual Great Brookhaven Town Cleanup May 16th

The Amateur Communications Team held an on the air missing child drill on 4/18/15. The drill commenced on 10:15 AM. The drill was made up of a 5 year old with blue eyes and blonde hair lost in Southhaven County Park.
The drill simulated that the ACT Team was working in conjunction with the Suffolk County Park Police and the Bellport Community Group. The ACT command center was located at the entrance to the park. Art W2ALW acted as net control.
11 Team members responded and manned various locations within the park. The Team members were, Gary KE2YK, Joe W2OFD, Art W2ALW, Vinny KC2WPP, John KD2DZY, Ken KD2DZZ, Gary N2TBC, John KD2GIK, Gil KC2CWB, Tony KC2VZG and Cheyanne R.
Tony KC2VZG’s Bellport Community Group assisted by manning the outside perimeter of the park.
Gil KC2WCB was asked to report to the ACT command center with his portable repeater as a backup. However it was not needed. It was suggested that the Team run additional tests with the portable repeater from various locations within our area to insure reasonable coverage.
The child was found sleeping in the area of the Park’s Steamer Trains at 10:25 AM. All team members were then asked to report to the command center for debriefing.
The drill was monitored by a Professional Emergency Communications Expert and a review will be forthcoming. Lets use the review to improve our procedures going forward.
I’d like to thank Art W2ALW for running the net and to Joe W2OFD for setting up the drill. I’d also like to thank Tony KC2VZG for having the Bellport Community Group at our disposal.
The drill was secured by net control at 10:33 hours and the W2DQ repeater was returned to normal Amateur Radio communications.
Hello everyone for those of you who did not know I spent the week of my Spring Break in New Orleans on a mission trip to help with Katrina Relief work.
It was a great experience and crazy that it was 10 years ago and there is still much devastation there. We had done some amazing work on helping rebuild homes and clearing out debris in fields. Also help restore a couple of churches by doing re-flooring and repainting the inside of the church.
Among all our hard work we got some free time to head into the city of New Orleans. I was on Bourbon Street when I saw a bike taxi go past and he was talking on his cellphone and it sounded like when he was done talking I heard the Zello roger drop tone.
So I being curious George, paid to take one of them bike taxis down the road to see if they were actually really using Zello on cellphones as there way of communications.
I heard the tone again , I asked the man driving the bike what do you guys use to communicate between the company and all the other bike taxis he said we use these phones with a radio app on it and we can talk to all other taxi’s and the main dispatching station which uses actual radios. I asked to take a look at the app and he said sure thing I looked at it and long be hold it was Zello @ Work.

I would like to thank Joe and the others for the fast response to the car accident I had last morning Monday.
Suffolk County Police took only 7 minutes response then 2 minutes later 2 more patrol cars and an ambulance. By the time of the accident I was with breathing problems due to the either hit to the steer wheel or seat belt, I also slammed my head to the drivers door. Once I was inside the ambulance I had a EKG, then I was transported to Brookhaven ER. Now I’m resting at home and really proud of all of you guys.
Act Team works!!!!!! But the sad part of the story is how did We test the team! Vinny went to the ER to check on me. I’ll be back on track pretty soon, my truck is out of commission at this point; but the pick up truck is up and running!!!! If We need it. Thanks again to all and 73’s.Please I’m sorry for any grammar mistake.

1/26 11:05 AM – Our Team responded to an MVA On William Floyd Parkway. W2OFD dispatched the call to the First Responders. One of our Team members was dispatched to the scene for photographs and to check on the status of the victims.
1/26 To 1/27 – Our Team held an informal weather net from approximately 12PM Monday until 3PM Tuesday. Since Brookhaven ARES and the ACT Team are guests on the W2DQ repeater systems, at 20:30 hours the Team stood down for the 10 minute Brookhaven Town ARES net.
